Ask a Teacher: Raise of Rise?

名师答疑:Raise 还是Rise

北京pk拾Have you ever been confused by the verbs "raise" and "rise"?Both words mean "to move upward."They also sound similar. But we don't use them in the same way.

你是否曾被“raise”和“rise”这两个动词搞糊涂?这两个词的意思都是“向上移动”。它们听起来也很相似。但是它们的使用的方式不同。

Adriana from Uruguay says:

来自乌拉圭的阿德里亚娜说:

北京pk拾I would like to know the difference in meaning between "raise" and "rise" and when to use one or the other.I asked this question to a U.S. citizen and she could not tell me the answer.

我想知道“raise”和“rise”的意思有什么不同,以及什么时候使用这两个词。为此我请教了一个美国公民,她也说不出个所以然。

Hello Adriana and thanks for writing to us!

阿德瑞娜你好,谢谢你给我们写信!

That is a great question and something many English learners wonder about. The short answer is that "raise" is a transitive verb and "rise" is intransitive.I'll tell you what that means in a moment.

北京pk拾这是一个很好的问题,也是许多英语学习者想知道的。简而言之,“raise”是及物动词,而“rise”是不及物动词。我一会儿我再具体告诉你。

北京pk拾But, as you saw, many native English speakers might not be able to describe that difference.I suspect the same is true for you in Spanish – the right words just come at the right time, perhaps without you knowing the technical reason.

北京pk拾但是,正如你所看到的,许多以英语为母语的人可能无法描述这种差异。合适的词语在合适的时间出现,我想你的母语西班牙语也是如此,或许连你也说不出个所以然。

To answer your question more fully, let me begin by giving you the dictionary meanings of each verb:

北京pk拾为了更全面地回答你的问题,让我们先从每个动词的字典意义开始:

北京pk拾To raise means to lift or move something or someone upward. It also means to increase.

北京pk拾To raise意思是把某物或某个人向上举起或移动。它也有增加的意思。

To rise means to move upward or to increase.

北京pk拾To rise意思是向上移动或增加。

北京pk拾Notice that "raise" includes the words "something" and "someone."That's the big difference between the two. With "raise," something is causing the upward movement of something else, whereas with "rise," the cause is not stated.

北京pk拾注意,“raise”使用的对象可以是“something”和“someone”。这就是两个动词间的最大区别。在某物引起另一物的上升运动中可以使用“raise”,然而使用“rise”的语境中并没有体现出这种因果关系。

Raise is a transitive verb, which means it takes a direct object.A direct object is a person or thing that receives the action of the verb. Here is an example:

北京pk拾“Raise”是一个及物动词,后面可以直接跟宾语。直接宾语是动作的承受者。来看一个例子:

北京pk拾Adriana raised her hand when she had a question.

北京pk拾阿德里安娜有问题要问,于是她举起了手。

北京pk拾Here, the subject (Adriana) is causing the object (her hand) to move upward. Here's another example:

北京pk拾在这个例句中,是主语(阿德里安娜)使她的手举起来的。还有一个列子:

The restaurant raised dinner prices for Valentine's Day.

北京pk拾饭店在情人节这天提高了晚餐的价格。

The subject (the restaurant) is causing the object (dinner prices) to increase.

北京pk拾主语(饭店)导致了宾语(晚餐价格)的抬高。

北京pk拾On the other hand, "rise" is intransitive. It is never followed by a direct object. Here's an example:

另一方面,“rise”是不及物动词。它从来不直接跟宾语,来看一个例子:

北京pk拾Warm air rises.

热空气上升。

Here's another example:

还有另外一个例子:

北京pk拾Swedish stocks rose after the election Monday.

北京pk拾周一的选举日过后,瑞典股市上涨。

Looking at this example, we can see there is a cause for the rise of stocks, but we do not directly state it in the subject-verb-object way do with "raise."

由这个股票上涨的例子,我们可以看出股票上涨是有原因的,但是我们并没有像“raise”那样直接用主-动-宾的方式来描述“上涨”。

Notice that the past tense of "rise" is "rose."That's because the verb is irregular: rise, rose, risen. But, "raise" is regular: raise, raised, raised.

注意,“rise”的过去式是“rose”。那是因为“rise”是个不规则动词:rise, rose, risen。但是,“raise”是个规则动词:raise,raised,raised.
